Partner got a bit stuck here. West opened 1C and after I respond 1S finds there is not rebid without telling porkies. But which is the best lie. 2C showing 5, 2D revering and showing 16+ points. Actually West bid 1NT showing 2 spades and 15/16 points. So with 13 points and 6 spades I went straight to 4S for a jolly good board. I think West is supposed to open 1D allowing a 2C rebid.
4441 hands are bad whatever you do some of the time.
With 1=4=4=4 you can open 1D and rebid 2C telling a lie about the diamond length.
4=4=4=1 is worse. The book bid is to open 1H and rebid 2D if necessary. I hate that. Lying about a five-card major can cause major (excuse) the pun problems. I prefer to open 1D and rebid diamonds lying about a minor and keeping both majors in play should responder make another bid.
4=1=4=4 and 4=4=1=4 are not so bad as you can open 1C and rebid a major.
If you are stronger, 15+, you might consider rebidding in no trumps especially if your singleton is an honour.
