South obviously didn't have a natural bid to suit their hand. However when "temporising" it is best to do so in a minor suit, as pard is less likely to get carried away if there is a fit. A possible sequence could be something like:
1♣ 1♦; 1♦ temporising 1♥ 2♠; if 1♠ is natural then 2♠ should be 4th suit forcing, preferably GF 3♣ 4♣; 3♣ denies a spade stop 4♦ 4nt; 4♦ shows a cue in pard's suit, so not a shortage; 4nt is RKCB 5♣ 5♦; 5♣ shows 0 or 3; 5D is Q ask 6♣ 6NT; 6♣ shows Q♣ (needs partnership agreement as to what steps mean what) and no other king South can count 11 tricks and has a 4-3 heart fit or a spade finesse for the 12th if North has nothing besides the 3 aces and Q♣
