North's bids appear sub-optimal. With a 2card heart suit and 4 in the oppo suit a X can easily end in trouble when pard starts bidding hearts. A rebid of 1Nt shows a much stronger hand.
At another table east chose to compete with 1S over the X with poor values and ended up in trouble when west bid 3 NT, over south's 2d (which is questionable also).
