Interesting bidding at our table. North opened 2H and South went 3NT. A diamond lead from West sets up the defeat which I don't think we did. South makes the 3NT which they shouldn't but we get 78% because the right contract is 4H. The 2H opening by North is a bit naughty.
I don't like upgrading into 2NT. 2NT is already awkward to bid after. As I have said elsewhere recently it is sometimes affectionately known as the 'slam killer'.
The three kings needing protection is a fair point. But opening 1H will allow you to protect the kings reasonably often - every time partner has three or more hearts and raises and every time partner has four spades and when partner has 10 points and can respond at the two level.
Also 2NT is already a wide range if you play 20-22. 19-22 is becoming unweildly.
Having said that there are some really good players who upgrade often into 2NT.

ReplyDelete3NT should fail on a diamond or a club lead.
ReplyDelete2H seems wrong with poor hearts and five spades. Pass and see if you can bid your suits more accurately later. But it could have worked out.
3NT is a bit short sighted partner basically needs stoppers in all the side suits for you to be safe there.
P P 1H 2NT* * minors
4H P P P
maybe or EW might find a 5m bid and push NS to 5H.
Wayne, would u consider opening South as 2NT, upgrading a hcp due to the high quality nature and the desire to protect 3 suits from opening lead?
