Many open light in 3rd position. With such a hand as North u could open 1C and pass anything partner says. South's 1S appears strange.
West should have longer hearts for 3H. If they had 10+ points and 5 hearts they could have bid 2 hearts over 1S, The X presumably shows 4+ hearts and 6+ hcp, so X followed by heart bid should show 6 hearts and weakish.
I wouldn't open with ten balanced here in third seat.
ReplyDelete1. The vulnerability is only equal. Favourable would be better.
2. There is not a good suit to open.
3. With honours in every suit I don't want to deflect partner from a winning lead in another suit.
4. When near ten points and no playing potential you might get raised too high by partner with a similar 10 points.
To open light I like a good suit or a serious chance to disrupt the opponents bidding. In the latter case I would like the vulnerability to be favourable. With a good suit and only a bit light I would call the opening a tactical bid. Opening really light in third seat is what is called a psychic bid. The bridge equivalent of a poker bluff. Psychic bids are part of the game but if you do them too often then they may become implicitly part of your system which can cause you problems with the director.
