  1. 1S (X) 3S is more normal.

    Some play a conventional raise instead of 3S, usually 2NT to show an invitational or better raise. This convention is called Truscott, which is similar to a Jacoby 2NT response. This allows 3S to be a weaker more preemptive hand.

    1S (X) 3S - weakish and competitive, I like a range of about 4-7 with four spades but other ranges are possible.

    1S (X) 2NT - invitational or better with spade support (normally four).
