  1. 2♦ is forcing by North. Before partnerships start playing splinters they need a sound understanding of which bids are forcing, as splinters are the next level up from the force.
    In the above sequence South should bid 3♠. As it is the only unbid suit it is a stopper ask (could be considered 4th suit forcing) for 3NT. 3♠ can also be an advance cue, to be clarified in subsequent bidding.
